European Leaders Push Stronger EU Role Against Arctic Security Risks
The warning was issued in a joint declaration following the European Arctic Summit, where leaders from Finland, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden discussed the region's changing strategic landscape.
The leaders said increasing geopolitical rivalry, combined with Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine, is transforming the Arctic's security environment and creating new challenges for Europe.
"We note with serious concern the significant and long-term threat Russia poses to Euro-Atlantic security," the leaders said, citing what they described as Moscow's expanding activities in the Arctic as well as hostile and hybrid actions targeting European countries.
They also stressed that the EU needs to improve its readiness and strengthen its involvement in the European Arctic as security conditions continue to evolve.
"We call for the European Union to take on a more strategic and proactive role in the European Arctic and commit to strengthening the Union’s Arctic engagement in a coherent and forward-looking manner with adequate resources and in line with evolving geopolitical realities," the declaration said.
