Canada Formally Applies to Join UK-Led Joint Expeditionary Force
"Prime Minister (Mark) Carney announced that Canada has formally applied to join the Joint Expeditionary Force and welcomed the UK's support for Canada's participation in this important initiative," Carney's office said in a statement.
The announcement followed a meeting in the UK between Carney and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, where the two leaders discussed strengthening the longstanding defense partnership between their countries.
The JEF currently comprises Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK.
Carney's office said the two prime ministers also explored opportunities for defense industrial collaboration through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), which Canada joined as an observer this past July.
Separately, Downing Street said the leaders discussed both the promise and the risks posed by artificial intelligence, agreeing that governments and the tech sector need to work together to tackle shared concerns and safeguard online safety.
Burnham also praised Canada's move this summer to become the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme.
